PKM Through the Eyes of a New Intern
When I first started the recruitment process during my freshman year at GSU, my biggest concern was trying to find a place with a good work environment right off the bat. However, as time went on, I began to really enjoy networking and getting to know how each business’ culture aligned with its mission statements. The more I talked with different firms, the more I was able to pick out certain characteristics I wanted to find in the company I chose to intern with.
After getting the opportunity to have some real world accounting experiences during my sophomore year, I began to pursue internships in public accounting to see if I would be able to vibe with that area of the profession. PKM stood out to me the most because of how consistently the firm’s managing partner came to the recruitment events. I can’t remember any other firm that did that outside of at “Meet the Firms”. On top of that, PKM’s employees were surprisingly transparent with their jobs. They weren’t trying to sell me on some make believe fairy tale, but instead they gave me honest answers to the questions I asked. That really helped me make the decision to apply for an internship with them.
The last thing I wanted to do was end up in a situation that was not ideal for my growth as a young professional. So far, my internship with PKM has been very engaging. They don’t just give you busy work – they give you the experiences that you can expect as a full time employee. I’m only a month in and I already know exactly what to expect in terms of the firm’s culture and day to day activities.
From what I’ve seen so far, you can be as involved or uninvolved as you want to be. If you really put your head down and don’t be afraid to ask questions, you can get a lot out of this opportunity. I’m not entirely sure at this point if the public accounting field is right for me, but I definitely couldn’t have chosen a better firm to help me find out.
