LEED® Certification — Is It in Your Future?

Is your company experienced in LEED certified projects? Do you have people on staff who are accredited LEED professionals? If not, you’ll almost certainly want to in the near future — if only for the opportunity to bid on “green” projects.

The LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) green building rating system was developed to provide third-party verification that a building was designed and constructed using strategies that improve performance in five key areas:

  • Sustainable site development
  • Water savings
  • Energy efficiency
  • Materials selection and
  • Indoor environmental quality.

Applying to both commercial and residential buildings, LEED is used by architects, developers, facility managers, engineers, construction managers, lenders and other professionals to help ensure a project’s long-term sustainability.

State and local governments across the country are adopting LEED for publicly owned or publicly financed buildings, and there are LEED initiatives in nearly all federal agencies.

As part of the new “LEED v3,” launched in 2009, the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) assumed administration of LEED certification for commercial and institutional projects. It also manages the LEED Professional Credential program. Current credentials include:

  • LEED Green Associate, which denotes basic knowledge of green design, construction and operations.
  • LEED Accredited Professional, which signifies advanced knowledge in green building practices and the ability to specialize in a particular LEED rating system.
